This privacy policy explains how the Web Annotator – Highlights & Draw & Notes browser extension ("Extension", "we", "us", "our") handles information. The Extension is designed to work primarily on-device and minimize data sent to any server.

2. Data We Collect

• User‑created content: Your highlights, notes, drawings, images, and settings are stored locally in your browser (IndexedDB/extension storage). We do not receive this content.
• Clipboard access: Only when you explicitly click "Copy" will the Extension write selected text or images to your system clipboard. We do not otherwise read your clipboard.
• Network requests:
  • Update check: the Extension may fetch a small JSON file to check the latest version (e.g. https://timeline-1259196990.cos.ap-shanghai.myqcloud.com/latest.json) and may open https://web-annotator.com when you choose to download updates. No personal data is attached.
  • Optional image loading for previews/downloads occurs only when triggered by you.
• Diagnostics: Non‑personal technical messages may be logged locally for debugging. These are not sent to us.

3. How We Use Data

• Provide core features: create, display, edit, and manage highlights/notes/drawings.
• Optional update notifications: inform you about new versions.
• Improve UX: local settings remember preferences such as language and UI state.

4. Data Storage and Retention

• Your content and settings are stored locally until you delete them or uninstall the Extension.
• You can export/import your data at any time.

5. Data Sharing

• We do not sell, rent, or trade your data.
• We do not share your personal data with third parties.
• When you open the update website, your browser connects directly to that site under its own privacy policy.

6. Permissions

• Tabs/activeTab: determine current page for creating marks and previews.
• Storage: save notes, drawings, and settings locally.
• Scripting/content: render highlights and side panel UI on pages you visit.
• Clipboard‑write: used only when you explicitly copy content.

We request only the minimum permissions needed for the features you use.

7. Third‑Party Services

Update hosting (cloud object storage) and the website web-annotator.com are used for version information and downloads. No personal data is attached to update checks.

8. Security

We minimize data collection and keep your data on device by default. However, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure. Please export and back up your data regularly if needed.

9. Your Choices

• Manage data: add, edit, delete, export, and import your content within the Extension.
• Language: switch between supported languages in settings.
• Updates: manually check for updates or install new versions from our official site.

10. Children's Privacy

This Extension is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Continued use of the Extension after changes indicates your acceptance of the updated policy.
